Hand knitting uses bar needles, with a long history, exquisite skills, and flexible and changeable flower shapes. It has been widely spread and developed among the people. In 1982, the silk fabrics unearthed in the Mashan Warring States Tomb in Jiangling, China contained a ribbon-shaped single-sided weft-knitted two-color jacquard silk knitted fabric. It is the earliest hand-knitted fabric that has been discovered so far, about 2,200 years ago. Based on this cultural relic, it can be inferred that the origin of Chinese hand-knitting was even earlier. Machine knitting began in 1589. British W. Lee got inspiration from hand knitting and created the first hand knitting machine. It has more than 3,500 parts, crochet needles are arranged in rows, and 16 stitches can be knitted at a time. China's first singlet knitting factory was founded in Shanghai in 1896. The first hosiery factory in China was established in Guangzhou in 1907.
